Handling Form Data and Validations
Hello, students! Welcome to Lesson 3 of Working with Forms in Vue.js. Today, we will learn how to handle form data and validations.
Handling Form Data
When a user submits a form, the form data is sent to the server.
However, before sending the form data to the server, you may want to handle it in some way. For example, you may want to:
- Validate the form data to ensure it’s valid.
- Convert the form data to a format suitable for the server.
- Cleanse the form data to remove any invalid characters.
Validating Form Data
Validating form data is crucial to ensure that the data is valid. For instance, you may want to validate an email input field to ensure that it contains a valid email.
Vue.js provides support for form validation using the v-validate
directive. The v-validate
directive allows you to define validation rules for form fields.
Example
<input type="email" v-model="email" v-validate="{ required: true, email: true }">
In the example above, the email
input field will be validated using the following rules:
- The field is required.
- The field must contain a valid email.
If the email
input field is not valid, a validation error will be displayed.
Converting Form Data
Sometimes, you may need to convert form data to a format suitable for the server. For example, you might need to convert a date input field to a Date object.
Vue.js provides support for converting form data using the v-bind
directive. The v-bind
directive allows you to bind form data to properties or HTML elements.
Example
<input type="date" v-model="date" v-bind:value="date | date">
In the example above, the date
input field will be converted to a Date object before being sent to the server.
Cleaning Form Data
Sometimes, you may want to clean form data before sending it to the server. For instance, you might want to remove any invalid characters from the form data.
Vue.js provides support for cleaning form data using the v-trim
directive. The v-trim
directive removes all whitespace from the beginning and end of a string.
Example
<input type="text" v-model="name" v-trim>
In the example above, all whitespace from the beginning and end of the name
input field will be removed before the data is sent to the server.
Conclusion
Handling form data is an important part of any application that uses forms. By learning how to handle form data, you can ensure that the data is valid and suitable for the server.
In the next module, we will learn how to dynamically bind CSS styles with Vue.js.
Challenge
Here’s a challenge for you:
- Create a form that collects the user’s name, email, and password. Validate the form data to ensure it’s valid.
Good luck!
Tip
You can use the v-validate
directive to validate form data.
