Initial Configuration of the Development Environment
Hello, students! Welcome to Lesson 3 of Introduction to Vue.js. Today, we’ll learn how to set up the development environment to start using Vue.js.
Requirements
To set up the development environment for Vue.js, you’ll need the following requirements:
- Node.js: Node.js is a JavaScript runtime platform required to run Vue.js. You can download Node.js from the Node.js download page: https://nodejs.org/en/download/.
- NPM: NPM is a package manager used to install Vue.js packages. It comes pre-installed with Node.js.
Installation of Node.js and NPM
To install Node.js and NPM, follow these steps:
- Go to the Node.js download page: https://nodejs.org/en/download/.
- Select the appropriate package for your operating system.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install Node.js.
Verification of Installation
To verify if Node.js and NPM were installed correctly, open a terminal and run the following command:
node -v
This should display the installed version of Node.js.
To check if NPM was installed correctly, run the following command:
npm -v
This should display the installed version of NPM.
Installation of Vue CLI
Vue CLI is a command-line tool that makes it easy to create and manage Vue.js projects. You can install it using the following command:
npm install -g @vue/cli
Creating a New Project
To create a new Vue.js project, use the following command:
vue create <project-name>
For example, to create a project called “my-first-project,” you would run the following command:
vue create my-first-project
This will create a new directory named my-first-project
with the following files:
src/App.vue
: This is the main file of your application.package.json
: This file contains the dependencies of your application.README.md
: This file contains information about your application.
Running the Project
To run your project, navigate to the project directory and execute the following command:
npm run serve
This will start a development server that will host your application at http://localhost:8080
.
Conclusion
In this lesson, we learned how to set up the development environment for Vue.js. Now, you’re ready to start creating your own Vue.js applications!
Challenge
Here’s a challenge for you:
- Open the “my-first-project” project you created in this lesson.
- Modify the
src/App.vue
file to display the message “Hello, world!” in the browser.
Good luck!
In the next module
In the next module, we will learn about Vue.js directives. Directives are elements that allow adding additional functionality to the DOM.
Some of the most common Vue.js directives include:
v-bind
: This directive binds data from your application to the DOM.v-if
: This directive renders an element conditionally.v-show
: This directive toggles the visibility of an element.v-for
: This directive iterates over a list.
I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ll create with Vue.js!
