What is Traversing?
Traversing the DOM is like exploring a maze of HTML elements. We can move from one element to another, go up or down the hierarchy, all to find and manipulate specific elements.
Descendants and Ancestors
We can access the child elements of an element using childNodes
and children
. Let’s take a look at an example:
var container = document.getElementById('myContainer'); // Accessing children using childNodes var allChildren = container.childNodes; // Accessing children using children (only HTML elements) var onlyElements = container.children;
Here, allChildren
will contain all nodes, including text nodes and line breaks, while onlyElements
will have only the HTML child elements.
Parent and Sibling Elements
We can also access the parent of an element using parentNode
and sibling elements using previousSibling
and nextSibling
. Let’s see an example:

Through the Parent Element
